Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice is coming up with it’s release on the 8th of August and we thought this might be a good opportunity to give a rundown of events and news you might be interested in about the game.
Hellblade: Developed by Ninja Theory
Hellblade was developed by a small land independent game studio called Ninja Theory. In it’s essence, it is an indie studio. But this title they have been working on would differ from any other indie game. The game is said to be a AAA title but the folks at Ninja Theory don’t like it to see it this way. They are more inclined to call it a hybrid between AAA studios and independent studios.
Ninja Theory were behind the critically acclaimed 2013 reboot of Devil May Cry. Capcom and Ninja Theory collaborated with Ninja Theory doing the developing and Capcom the publishing. It proved to be a fruitful partnership and the game is still remembered with high praise.
Ninja Theory was in formed in 2004. They say their company is defined by three key aspects. A ninja-class melee gameplay, strong character stories and a unique art vision. One of these aspects I already got from their trailers and other content they’ve shown for the game is the focus on interesting characters. Senua looks like such a deep character. She look constantly afraid in this chaotic world and just looks out of her element.
Hellblade and Senua
Senua is battling psychosis from trauma she previously experienced. She is played by Melina Juergens who has done an amazing job in defining the character. Even before I knew of Senua’s affliction, I could already see that there was something wrong with her. Speaking of which- the way they did the facial/motion capture for Senua is bloody brilliant. Using the versatility of Unreal Engine 4, Ninja Theory were able to capture actress Melina Juergens performing a scene as Senua then render that in real time.
It might not sound that exciting but it removes a whole lot of in betweens and has the devs focus on quality. This is also why the character seems so alive in the gameplay we’ve seen. Many, including myself, were stunned at how dynamic the character looked. This is a collaborative effort between Ninja Theory, Epic Games,3Lateral,Cubic Motionn, Ikinema and Xsens. We can only imagine what other devs can do with this.
Ninja Theory consulted neurological experts on Senua’s psychosis and implemented what they learned into her character.
Here is a preview of the 25 minute feature into Senua’s psychosis. The opportunity to explore and bring awareness to mental illness through a character we can get so immersed with is amazing. How long has it been since we have had a character who has been battling a legitimate mental illness.
Senua is a Celtic Warrior and the game is based on this mythology as well as Norse mythology. We follow Senua through her journey, battling her psychosis and traversing the nightmare world. This world is a mix between her psychotic hallucinations and the world itself.
Hellblade comes out 8th of August and is available to preorder fro PS4, PC and Xbox One.
